<image:caption>Questionable Value I admired the illustrations in this crumbling 3000 page turn-of-the-century dictionary, so I cut out every single illustration to save. Small detailed illustrations have always excited me, from my earliest memories of book reading. Despite being out of date, with much of its information incorrect or obsolete, I couldn’t bear the idea of all these detailed little illustrations in this dictionary being discarded. To me, they represent someone’s time and labor, and therefore have value, even if that value has no place in our current culture. Cutting out circles came naturally as a way to frame and center each image. Circles with images suggested the idea of coins, and so I painted the space surrounding each image gold to illuminate that connection. On the back of each “coin” I tried to find vague but semi-sinister intent in the happenstance collection of words in proximity to each other, stringing together suggestive phrases that felt like a surreptitious undercurrent in a collection of knowledge that purports to represent truth and neutrality. I have admired the artist El Anatsui for many years, and wanted to try using his technique of wired together bits of material to create draping textile-like forms. The circular forms and suggestion of wealth and armor reminded me of the feather capes that Hawaiian kings once wore, Ahu Ula. Creating a “protective” yet flimsy cloak suggesting past wealth in the midst of the pandemic seemed like an appropriate symbol for the omnipresent anxiety of 2020, a regal garment of questionable value.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In Defense of Extraction This cuirass is made up of, and covered with, images of ore from a 1960’s children’s book of minerals from around the world. I extracted the minerals from the book just as they might be extracted from the earth, thereby rendering the book useless, and heightened the “value” of each specimen by investing additional labor in by giving each one dimension. The idea that mineral wealth might protect us is undermined by the inherent fragility of this object; there is no such thing as protection from the human habit of extraction.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Caput Caput means head, but sounds the same as kaput, meaning something is finished in a terminal sense. This helmet pretends that you can divide up, conquer, and possess the world and its resources; the wearer becomes the center of that world. The coins, mainly from colonizing countries, hover around the globe-like head piece to create a sort of protective barrier. The currency, made of repurposed maps, represents individual countries and the wealth they have accrued by claiming ownership. The coins reach out into space, the actual boundary for our species, the next place to colonize. While this piece was made before the Titan submersible event, it reinforces the false equation of money = protection.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inherited Pelt This fragile hide-like form is composed of repurposed envelopes, the windows reminiscent of microscope specimens. Each window holds a species from a period in evolution using images from an explanatory chart in a Golden Books Children’s Encyclopedia. The entire history of life on earth is bound together as a continuous process, just as the red wire runs like veins through the entire piece, all connected and ultimately introducing “Modern Man” at the bottom of the piece. This, then, is the legacy that we each inherit, built upon millions of years and cells, and makes me wonder what might eventually descend from us.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Protection from Self Reflection This vestment, made of historic coin images, features heads of state and symbols of power. Money can be a protective strategy, a way to fend off threats from the world at large. But it also can cloud introspection, conflating self worth with external value. Therefore the reverse side of this garment is mirrored, revealing a distorted reflection to the viewer as a parallel for the false identity of wealth</image:caption>

<image:caption>Icarus In the Greek myth of Icarus, hubris leads to catastrophic loss. This cause and effect formula underlies many of these works. In “Icarus”, hundreds of butterfly species, excerpted from a world encyclopedia of lepidoptera, have been collected like beautiful specimens and harnessed to each other in pursuit of an arrogant goal. The very act of traditional butterfly collecting negates their ability to fly; here, the delicate violence of stapling all these creatures' wings together denies the functionality of the result. Possession becomes Midas’ touch: what is extracted in excess from the natural world begets our downfall.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Parental Poncho “Parental Poncho” is composed of both of my parents’ CAT scans. Obviously non-functional as protection, it is made up of images that are the most intimate and most anonymous visual representations possible - I am looking at the inside of my parents’ brains, yet who they were is nowhere to be found. And while this garment can surround me with my parents, I am exposed nevertheless. When I think of all the ways my parents tried to keep me safe, I become aware of the ways they could not protect me as well, just as I cannot protect my children from much of the world.</image:caption>

The disks along the bottom edge feature dozens of wildflower photographs, but give way to pans of parched cracked earth at the top edge, suggesting drought and the disappearance of botanical bounty. The underside is lined with technical illustrations portraying taxonomic variations of the plant species, and in combination with the severity of the metal construction, presents a clinical version of the visceral exterior.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lady Luck A fortune teller’s turban, or a bandaged head - both allude to the role of luck, and the desire we have to control it. The scarf-like train of the bandage gradually reaches the ground, hosting a wandering trail of formal and informal arrangements made up of cards, lucky “hands” in Bridge, each hand lined with lucky stars/constellations. They are supported by delicate gauze, a material that suggests both wounds and survival after bad luck. Luck feels like the most important and most indeterminate force in our lives. In the face of that, cards and constellations seem like attempts to quantify, or capture luck, and to ward off our ultimate lack of control.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hanging by a Thread The shape of the United States forms a curious silhouette we all immediately recognize. It has always looked to me like a small-headed big-bellied beast precariously balanced on tiptoes, which also seems to describe our national character, even more so during the 2024 election. I had a collection of small maps of the US, culled from reference books, and as I added to this growing pile of cut outs, they began to look like vulnerable little life forms needing care. That association, paired with the traditional pastel coloring of maps, led me to thinking about baby blankets, like the entire country was made up of hurt that needed swaddling. At the same time, the variety of information these maps contained, from distribution of religious affiliation, to GDP per state, to changes in weather patterns due to climate change, reminded me of how fragmented this country is, as echoed by our state of disunion during the election. And then there is the terrain itself, so endlessly fascinating in its vastness and variety, unified by its own contiguous land mass. With the land as container for all these differences, I set about joining the pieces together like a crazy quilt, a desperate attempt to corral all the parts into a whole. Making this felt like performing a symbolic act of caring for the fragile connections that still remain between us, barely holding together in the face of a hostile takeover.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Shared Air Site specific installation on the ParkLine for Summit Public Art and Overlook Hospital, summit, NJ “Shared Air” draws attention to the critical role trees play as “the lungs of the world.” It takes several trees to create enough oxygen for each of us. At a time when being able to breathe is on many people's minds, these 50 pairs of lung-shaped silhouettes, interspersed among the trees behind Overlook Hospital, remind us how essential both medicine and environment are to our survival.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Sky Cache” a site-specific installation by Kate Dodd* commissioned by the Exchange Place Alliance cache definition: a safe place to store things, including memory “Sky Cache” is inspired by the reflection of the sky on the water, tying them together into one continuous plane. This enclosed plane in the middle of the Jersey City boardwalk is a strange sight. It is framed by fencing as if it’s an exhibit, but surrounds a mysteriously empty circular pier, a contrast to the dazzling view across the river. “Sky Cache” gathers all the surrounding elements together within this oddly vacant focal point: the towering skyline, the curiosity of passersby, the rhythm of waves crashing below, and the expanse of the river stretching to the horizon beyond.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ebb and Flow: “Claim-It” 30 acres, neoprene foam and surveyor's tape site-specific installation for the Bumpkin Island Artists' Encampment, Berwick Institute, Boston Harbor “Ebb and Flow: Claim-It” used colorful surveyors' tape to anchor floating yellow ‘claims’ to demarcate the island's continual state of acreage in flux, as half of Bumpkin's acreage disappears with the tides twice a day. By temporarily ‘claiming’ the entire intertidal zone, this work explores concepts of ownership, custody, and consumption while questioning who and what have ‘claims’ on us, and conversely, how have we made claims on the environment?  </image:caption>

      <image:title>works on paper - denim series</image:title>
<image:caption>These works using collage and paper cuts can be seen as a way of negotiating back and forth between two and three dimensions, a conversation that moves between the poles of image vs object, seduction vs consumption, value vs light, surface vs depth. The collages stem from two image sources, the first one is aerial, reflecting what I see as I fly back and forth over the country, looking down and ruminating about land use and morphology. The second source is a fine old printing of the Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones. The pages, especially those of ancient and colonized cultures, drew me in. The printing quality made the pages feel more like objects than images. Placing these jewel-like swatches on faux denim felt like studying them in relation to American cultural territory. As I cut and pasted cultural history on to this ground, I listened to stories about refugees, racists, and Republican sound bites. I mulled over how to give voice to the conflict I feel about being an American right now in the world. I debated questions concerning cultural appropriation in my head as I worked.</image:caption>

I mailed her an image every day, as a distraction for her, with each 'week' becoming a small book, a tribute to her strength in getting through her ordeal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>works on paper - scrapbooking - scrapbooking, back (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Scrapbooking, back Commercially sold in crafts stores, “scrapbook” paper provides a format for memories that doesn’t tell the full story behind the imagery, using preprinted materials to dictate how we preserve and brand our past. In “Scrapbooking”, thematic scrapbook paper sheets, overlaid with subversive images that are cut directly into the marketed imagery assert the unspoken truths that are disguised by the glossy “good time” veneer that our memories are supposed to have when mounted in this manner. What is “missing” (cut) from the image is what we are told to omit, or forget, about our “fond recollections”. Excised scraps are sorted into small specimen bags as “evidence”; like artifacts, they reveal the unacknowledged undercurrents of these memories.</image:caption>

The window portion of the envelope is important as a portal and a separation, between inside and outside, known and unknown, personal and institutional. This divide resonates with other images of division in our contemporary moment, from barriers and fencing, to isolation and quarantine, to inclusivity and exclusivity.</image:caption>

<image:title>public art - proposals - Brookland Middle School: banners and paving inserts (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Washington DC Brookland Middle School: banners and paving inserts Ten banners of varying lengths hang perpendicular to the school facade, each pair featuring an element-oriented color scheme. As one gets closer, it becomes clear that the color of each pair may be similar, but the surface pattern is not. One “wing”, or grouping of five banners, appears to have flowing parallel lines reminiscent of feathers, while the other “wing”, or grouping of five banners, has photographic views of the actual element associated with that particular color; each of these banners displays degrees of magnification, similar to the Eames’ Powers of Ten film, in which each view is taken closer than the previous one. As one walks by, the colors of the banners seem to shift; the elements/colors are different on each side, making for a transformative viewing experience depending on the direction of one’s approach. A large paving insert in the form of an abstracted feather, with veins on the feather made up of Brookland street names, will be inlaid in bronze within a concrete or exterior terrazzo surface. Every street name in the neighborhood, small or large, will be represented within this, as a way of acknowledging the history of Brookland. When reading about the development of Brookland’s name through its earliest inhabitants, it became clear how much the names of past residents and the names of streets interconnect. Those whose surnames are not reflected here still have a connection to the name of the place they were raised. Because Brookland is a neighborhood school, it is likely that every student will recognize at least one of these street names as theirs, and others belonging to their friends, their route to school, etc. While many of the students who start school this year will most likely move on some day, the street names will always be relevant to new students as well as those from the past. Using the feather, and its obvious relationship to wings, as a way of listing these meaning-laden names, rather than a map, directs the focus to each street equally, without than injecting some sort of hierarchy. With the conceptual essence of the world swaying on the wing-like banners above, and the feather like fossilized personal evidence below, the macro and the micro, the past, present and future, are visually connected.</image:caption>

<image:title>public art - proposals - Brookland Middle school: OUTDOOR CLASSROOM Solar wings (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Washington DC Brookland Middle school: OUTDOOR CLASSROOM Solar wings One of the prominent features of the outdoor classroom is the area at the south end provided for solar panels as a learning tool. The view from here is invigorating, and seems to invite some sort of visual call and response. A pair of solar powered wings which hover above the classroom and are illuminated a brilliant turquoise at night, visible for blocks around when viewed from the east, will unite these two features of the space. Both the school identity, and its sustainable design, would be broadcast through a form that has always been romantic and elusive to humans, a great pair of wings. When students want to identify which school they attend, they can immediately respond with pride, “I go to the one with the wings”.</image:caption>

<image:title>public art - proposals - brookland middle school: ENTRY PLAZA Water tank supply indicator and wind vanes (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Washington DC Brookland middle school: ENTRY PLAZA Water tank supply indicator and wind vanes The Brookland entry plaza is never totally unoccupied; both wind and water pass through all year long. A series of wind vanes that reflect the direction, consistency, and force of the wind will express this ebb and flow, and make it tangible to students, Vane ornaments will feature silhouettes of Pegasus, the school mascot, varying in height from ten to fifteen feet high, and would be scattered along the length of the plaza sidewalk parallel to the school façade. The casual, somewhat linear layout of these verticals will appear to support a pre-flight, nearly alight, herd of Pegasus. Depending on the wind conditions, the direction the herd faces will change, ranging from orderly alignments to colorful disarray. The wind’s behavior will be immediately visible due to the coloration of the Pegasus ornaments. Just as students wait for rain or snow and announce their earliest sighting to the class, defined wind direction will become another window gazing sport. The slightly maze-like arrangement of poles can provide entertainment, a spatial organizing device, or something to lean on for both students and parents waiting for pick up connections and transportation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pollinating Denver: proposal for garrison lightrail station This artwork focuses on pollination as both a metaphor for the role of residents in the greater Denver community and as an important component of local environmental stewardship. Just as plants depend on insect pollinators to stimulate growth, cities depend on commuters and public transportation to create a rich and diverse urban entity. The Eiber neighborhood’s emphasis on an agricultural past and current xeriscaping and sustainability issues means that plant pollination has always been and continues to be an integral part of local life. An interest in developing indigenous pollinators, partly by planting the native species that attract them, in the face of diminishing honey bee populations is especially urgent. The Garrison station provides an opportunity to support symbiotic relationships on both the macro and micro level.</image:caption>

Its double circle footprint, similar to the symbol for infinity, allows visitors to navigate their way through its maze-like interior. The entire structure features a positive ‘green’ message as well. The translucent walls of the entire structure, built of plastic bottles recycled by the local community and encased in plastic netting to create patterns of shifting hues, suggest reflections in water as they encircle the wooden frame. Dramatically lit at night, these parallel bands will glow with rich color, functioning as a magical lantern in downtown Atlantic City.</image:caption>

      <image:title>public art - proposals - “CON-TRIBUTARIES”, a proposal for the Riverscaping Competition (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>“CON-TRIBUTARIES”, a proposal for the Riverscaping Competition, Connecticut River, Pittsfield MA “Con-tributaries” is an initially benign illustration of the river, as a set of tributaries that merge, and yet it reflects the grim reality of human activity as it converges with extreme wet weather events and physically overflows into the Connecticut River. In echoing Dr. Seuss’ stylistic treatment of peripatetic plumbing, Con-Tributaries creates an inviting and playful approach to lure newcomers to the river from downtown Springfield, MA. Once visitors have identified a path to the riverbank, the stage is set for presenting the story of Springfield’s current relationship to the river. Upon arrival, the scenic presence of the river speaks for itself, and yet the typical resident’s understanding of the river’s health and use, by their very own community, may not be so immediate. This is where the awareness of Springfield’s continued use of CSOs comes into play, as the sculpture element in the competition-designated site educates visitors to this continued and destructive reliance on the river as a convenient removal device for human waste. Familiar recycled materials are incorporated into the artwork to further emphasize needed reconsideration of conventional approaches to the communal waste stream.</image:caption>

Despite multiple attempts to prevent its removal on my part, and others in Newark’s art scene, it was torn down Friday, 10/21, at 4:30 pm, 30 minutes prior to the Newark Open Doors Citywide Art Festival Friday Night Gallery Crawl. Needless to say, I was angry and heartbroken.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Incubator repurposed books, 12’ x 12’ x 12’ site-specific installation for Art Kiosk, Fung Collaboratives, Redwood City, CA “Incubator” is a visualization of the enrichment a book-filled environment creates. Growing up today, in a time of broken civil discourse and heightened anxiety about the future, the worlds that books present, and the creative thinking they stimulate, are needed more than ever to support imagining beyond current circumstances. “Incubator” is composed of thousands of stacked book “towers”, supported by a “foundation” of books. The empty spaces between the towers are filled with a delicate cut paper network of words and images culled from a variety of books, visually connecting the knowledge held within. As this paper network intensifies in size and complexity, it appears to rise and expand into a buoyant mass of potential, akin to the layering of ideas that accumulate from immersing oneself in books.</image:caption>

A tapestry of cut-up and interlinked aluminum soda cans and plastic soda bottles filled with brightly dyed water that cascades down the back entrance stairs from the museum itself, the bottles refract colored light just as the nets of woven aluminum strips reflect it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Window Into Floe 12’ x 30’ x 8’, plastic bottles and packaging materials site-specific installation for Rupert Ravens Nexxt gallery. Paterson, NJ This installation in a historic old mill building was part of "Flow follows Flow", an exhibit that focused on the role of the adjacent Great Falls on the Passaic River in industrializing the area. The size of the windows and the light they emitted was of immediate interest to me. While leaving the premises, I noticed the usual flow of trash in the parking lot, and decided to use this river of waste to further exaggerate the light quality of the windows through layers of translucent plastic packaging. My current work is often constructed of consumer waste products, and I found there were new formal qualities I could mine in styrofoam, bubble wrap and the like by creating imitation architectural window panes to mimic the existing fenestration, which captured the changing color of light, transforming the materials while pulling panes of light deeper into the exhibit space, allowing the exterior to flow into the interior via sunlight and waste.</image:caption>

The installation responds to the Noyes Museum, and its unique setting, perched on the edge of Forsythe Wildlife Refuge with picturesque views of Lily Lake, and to its original purpose as both an art collection and a decoy collection. Sculpting with the discards that result from the pursuit of purified drinking water, plastic bottles, the installation fills the generous windows of the museum’s central gallery as it descends to the lake, and culminates on the lake itself with an over-sized duck decoy that floats serenely on this body of water, used by the Refuge to moderate appropriate water levels for migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. Ultimately, the installation ties our local consumption habits to potential changes in our oceans by way of whimsical juxtapositions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Disposable Habits 8' x 9' x 12', 1000 styrofoam cups site-specific installation for Drawing Rooms, Jersey City, NJ “Disposable Habits” explores the beauty of humble materials from a formal perspective, but simultaneously raises the issues of permanency and the value of labor in art, as well as referencing environmental issues. This installation appears to drip from the windows into a floating sea of baroque swoops and curls which bubble to the sink like draining suds. The structure is visually seductive yet impedes movement through the room or to views beyond – this is the specter of the future, when our gluttony will literally glut our oceans, our air, our movement. The seemingly endless flow of consumption and disposal, that Styrofoam embodies so viscerally, permeates all of contemporary existence; incorporating that approach to art-making, as a consumption of materials and labor in the quest for new experience or event, provokes certain questions. Is it ever acceptable to be wasteful for the sake of pleasure? Is it possible to separate pleasure entirely from negative consequences? And are we willing to give up today’s pleasures to avoid the perils of our habits?</image:caption>

<image:caption>false spring, exterior in daylight 10' x 16' x 11', plastic bottles, plastic netting Site-specific installation for the porch above entrance to Baird Community Center, South Orange, NJ. Seen from across the town park, garlands of recycled plastic water bottles encased in colorful plastic netting are strung across the local community center porch, creating a color-saturated gradient. 'False Spring" is seductive yet artificial, a beacon of light and color in the heart of winter, while prefiguring the season to come. Metaphorically, following the rainbow may not lead to riches, but instead misuse of resources or inaccurate claims. In our search for purity, represented by the desire for “spring” water rather than tap water, we fail to acknowledge the price we pay by assigning minimal value to that which is no longer new, or “pure”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>UNDERSTORY site-specific installation for Ringwood Manor State Park repurposed plastic bottles, plastic netting, steel cable Understory, a term applied to vegetation between the canopy and the ground below, can also be thought of as behaviors that create a certain outcome. Our dependence on single use plastics, such as bottled water, is producing an exponentially expanding mass of its own, penetrating ecosystems everywhere. Where the concentric rings of a tree tell its long history, the concentric rings of bottles that form a plane in this installation represent the rapid accumulation of a new understory covering more and more of our ecosystem. The shift in color from perimeter to interior echoes the changing of the leaves as the season shifts to fall; by the end of the exhibition the tree’s bare silhouette will be starkly intersected by a troubling layer of our contemporary understory.</image:caption>
