16’ x 3’ x 8’, etched glass block windscreen
commission for 22nd St. station, Bayonne, NJ
Hudson Bergen Light Rail Transit System, by NJ Transit
These etched glass blocks feature a large scale silhouette of Bayonne's industrial east side, framed by an arcade of columns. Each column is filled with a pattern derived from common siding products that line Bayonne's residential neighborhoods, reinforcing the idea that the residential and industrial halves of Bayonne frame each other. The glass blocks that comprise the silhouette, of gas tanks, scaffolding, etc., are etched with images of architectural details, large and small, that are found throughout Bayonne, representing the broad spectrum of residential and ecclesiastical building styles that give the town its bustling sense of community. In short, industry is made up of its workers; workers lives are structured by industry - this design makes that relationship visible.
