These pieces are all constructed out of images and text from the Golden Book Children’s Encyclopedias collection, popular in the 50’s and 60’s. I cut up the strips of text and join the information on them into serendipitous relationships that simultaneously create delicate but self supporting structures. The resulting shadows emphasize the space between two dimensional materials and three dimensional objects. I’m seduced by the quality of the illustrations, and fascinated by the world view these volumes present, one of endless resource extraction and unstoppable human progress, and how crazy that looks now.
